well, u know what i ment by the valve cover, of course anyone can put one on, but its not hard to tell the actual M Engines. I belive all the M engines S14, S50, S52.... all have a chain driven cam, i dont know much about how this works all i know is mine is belt driven so Mine cant be over revved or ill bend a valve, as with the chain this problem is not as much of a problem or doesnt happen i dont know much about how that works but thats another way to tell i guess, and the twin cam... what else i cant think of anything with out a picture...Brakes, most people wouldnt change brakes cause its a minor difference to most people trying to mock an M Car. Im sure there are alot of things to distingush the M Cars from the Normal Series Cars. Most invisible to the untrained Eye im sure off.
I believe all M50 engines have chains. You put a valve cover on the engine in my 325i, which is chain driven, and you have an engine that is indistinguishable from an S50 US M3 engine, on the outside. It is also a 24 valve, DOHC inline six. AFAIK, you can over-rev and/or bend valves on just about anything if things break or electronic controls fail (or the car just allows you to do that.)
You can make a very convincing fake E36 M3, and it has been done on many occasions. If you change the front air dam, side skirts, side trim, rear diffuser, exhaust, badges, wheels, valve cover, door sills, instrument cluster, shift knob, and seats, you have yourself a complete cosmetic M3. (add suspension, brakes, differential, gearbox and engine to complete the transformation). A very lame thing to do, IYAM, but it apparently makes sense to some people.
