Lets settle the "M" issue once and for all...

My friend with the Audi S4 got into an argument with someone driving (from what he described) an E34 535i with an M badge on the back. He told him he shouldn't cheapen the badge and the heritage by putting it on his normal car.

It reminds me of the time I asked a guy with an RS4 badged A4 what he was thinking.

Now if I could only get him to get rid of the S4 . . .

(Just Kidding. I found that S4 for him).

i think unless the engine says BMW Power On the Valve Cover then it doesnt deserve an M Badge regardless what other mods are on it, It needs to be a Twin Cam too. Kinda like my Unlces M302 as he calls it. The 1900lb 200tii 255hp@7200rpm 267ft/lbs of torque S14 Powered 2002 D-Mod Car. Lets just say its faster than all E30 M3's its even met. The E36 on the other hand....well thats not fair.

the M valve cover can be put on later on too. somehow some people don't see the difference between a M3/M5 badge an M badge --> one has no number and therefor does not even attempt to fake to be an M3 or M5.

well, u know what i ment by the valve cover, of course anyone can put one on, but its not hard to tell the actual M Engines. I belive all the M engines S14, S50, S52.... all have a chain driven cam, i dont know much about how this works all i know is mine is belt driven so Mine cant be over revved or ill bend a valve, as with the chain this problem is not as much of a problem or doesnt happen i dont know much about how that works but thats another way to tell i guess, and the twin cam... what else i cant think of anything with out a picture...Brakes, most people wouldnt change brakes cause its a minor difference to most people trying to mock an M Car. Im sure there are alot of things to distingush the M Cars from the Normal Series Cars. Most invisible to the untrained Eye im sure off.

I believe all M50 engines have chains. You put a valve cover on the engine in my 325i, which is chain driven, and you have an engine that is indistinguishable from an S50 US M3 engine, on the outside. It is also a 24 valve, DOHC inline six. AFAIK, you can over-rev and/or bend valves on just about anything if things break or electronic controls fail (or the car just allows you to do that.)

You can make a very convincing fake E36 M3, and it has been done on many occasions. If you change the front air dam, side skirts, side trim, rear diffuser, exhaust, badges, wheels, valve cover, door sills, instrument cluster, shift knob, and seats, you have yourself a complete cosmetic M3. (add suspension, brakes, differential, gearbox and engine to complete the transformation). A very lame thing to do, IYAM, but it apparently makes sense to some people.

Ok lets get to root of my personal problem........
I want to...ummmm "mod" my car with visual and moderate engine performance parts(can you say moderate when it come to BMW?). I also would like to use only BMW MOTORSPORT parts. I know I can not REALISTICLY afford a M5. But someone who gets everything done by lets say "DINAN" can get AT LEAST 10pts of upgrades from DINAN: suspension and wheels or suspension, high flow cold air intake, and wheels or another combination gets a DINAN 5 badge. Well I have more than enough "M" upgrades to equal that. AC Schnitzer also has a program like this and it doesnt do anything to the engine(unless you count the exhaust).
Lets see......: M sport rims, steering wheel, interior, molding outside and in, aerodynamics kit, exhaust(although I change that to REMUS Romulus stainless steel- effin 561euro for that thing-car sounds better though and has a teeny bit more power). Not saying I have a M5 equivalent. But I do have a "M" Sport package auto and should by virtue of the NAME of the sport package in Europe be able to put a "M"(without number) symbol on my car and get absolutely no flack about it. Like I have been trying to say since the beginning of the post: "M" without # = motorsports additions "M" with # = motorsport vehicle including engine.

By the way I dont think they offer a complete separate "M" sport package in the States do they? Maybe someone can enlighten me on this situation....

Well I still want an "DMZ3" on my roadster, it is an M from BMW and I have Dinan supension, strut brace, cold air intake, etc. BMW only gave me an "M", oh heck, maybe I'll just put a "type R" on it, or maybe a Chevrolet "SS", then I could have a DMZ3TRSS". Teehee. It's your car folks, put what you want on it.

My 90' 318is is a dual overhead cam, chain driven, I-4, with headers. The only thing it doesn't have to tell it appart from, lets say a 90' m3, is the m power cover over the spark plugs.

Well by the looks of your tail end.....the cars tail end you do have the "D" already....and the "M"........I dont know where you would fit the "Z3" but you are perfectly justified in putting on if you want to.....be kinda cluttered though.....

I don't know what your engine looks like, but my understanding is it is quite different from what the E30 M3 S14 engine looks like, as shown here:

http://www.bmwworld.com/pics/3er/e30/m3/e30_12.jpg

That engine is 2/3 of the S38/M88 3.5 liter Motorsport 6, and a very different animal than the normal corporate 4 cylinder. The most obvious visual difference being the individual throttle body intake system.

I never thought about that. The "M" only on the roadster calls into question the whole "M" thing in a different way. When looking at some of BMW's information they seem to cross over the motorsport division a lot with regular production, making it seem less specialized. However, when reading information from the motorsport division itself, it would appear that the M is truly guarded for the purpose of "super superior" brand status, which then does not correspond to the whole use of the M on non M cars. I guess everytime I think I have it down I end up changing my mind.

I like the DMZ3TRSS. [fake] I wonder if I put a Porsche crest on mine if people would think it is a production crossover between the two companies. [8]

PS...I would NEVER add the M on my car no matter what I added or changed. But then again, I even stay away from license plate frames that have anything on them, mine is a plain frame painted the same color as the car. I think if someone wants an M, at least in the US, buy the M car. I would never add anything that was not part of the car. If it is a Dinan because of Dinan installed products by a Dinan source, they can put on the Dinan. But buying one off ebay because someone picked up a Dinan shift knob on ebay (not sure if they make this but this is just an example) is dumb IMO.

And as you can tell from mine I have no license plate frames, never liked them. Mine are covered in clear plastic. The Dinan logo is gone now too, as I finally got my Dinan badge. I'll post a picture when I get it on the car.

The Dinan looks good on yours. It is the real thing. [thumb] Some people just add a bunch of crap that does not fit and should not be there. If I had an M or a Dinan car, I sure would have that on mine. Otherwise I never would put it on.

You forgot the obligatory VTEC sticker! [rofl]

Don't even talk about putting the exalted SS badge on there! [:)]
