Not sure what you can find for that '84 engine, but for the money the best dollar-to-HP ratio is forced induction my friend (ie, supercharging/turbocharging). For little gains, get the engine to breath a little easier (ie, intake & exhaust).

Seriously, since the car is 20 years old, start with the basics. Turbo/Super on a 20 year old engine without first rebuilding the engine would be suicide. Check to see if there are any performance rebuild kits (pistons/rods/cam). You could get 25 - 50 hp over the stock specs easily from the right kit. If the engine is loose due to age, just doing a stock rebuild could regain 10 - 30 hp.

breathing easier is my first inclination. i'm thinking bored out throttle body, headers and free flow muffler. got any suggestions of a good but not too noisey muffler. i'd done that to my cressida which i must admit has given it notable gain but i'm getting tired of the loud muffler. i'm gonna go with a silencer on that but want something less intrusive without compriomising performance for the bimmer. also i'm thinking of a powder coated intake pipe. any thoughts?
