Alright. Let's say someones thinking about getting a BMW as a first/modify car. What kind's the most recommended series/model? I'm leaning towards M3 or something.

Needing a bit of help.

For a first car to modify, I wouldn't look at the M3 unless you already have a lot of wrenching skills or money. If you screw something up on an M3, it will be an arm and a leg to fix. On a regular 3 series, it'll just be your arm --- you get to keep the leg.

I'd look for an E30 or an E36 3 series - at least a 325is. How much money do you have to play with? M's are speciality cars - like ANY specialty car, it's going to cost you a substantial amount more to maintain, insure, and mod. You can make a regular 3 series handle just as well as an M3, and in the case of an E36 328is (1996+), you can make it nearly as fast.

Are you looking for track (autox), power (straight line), or visual modifications? If the first, definitely go with an E30. For the latter two, I'd go with an E36.

If you want serious modifications, buy an E30 (late 80's/early 90's), and drop an S52 (e36 m3 engine) in it, then convert it to OBD1. You will be pushing more than 300hp.
