I recently sold my BMW motorcycles due to health reasons and purchased my first BMW auto. A seductive 2002 Z3 Coupe 3.0. It goes like snot but I can't seem to shift without some jerky response. Its only a problem when starting from a dead stop or shifting to second. Other than that its very sweet. I've had many cars with a manual trans but none this sensitive. Could it be me? [screwy]

It sounds like your clutch is working properly. Do you get any burnt clutch smell? It may be that you just need to get use to it, as I can tell you mine was hard to learn.

I've learned over the years that BMW makes the "fastest" clutch, when you take it into first and so on, they do it so you can shift faster on a track and I think it gives you a better driving feel. I think they have always done this I drove a '74 2002tii once and I could not believe how the clutch responded.

The first time my dad drove (my old M3), he said that there was something wrong with the clutch it shouldn't engage so quickly (he explained it as; "when you take the clutch out its like right away and its in gear").

Honestly the car is fine, connoisseurs of Manual transmissions always notice this when stepping into a BMW, it takes some getting used to but it will be fine, BTW was it CPO, if it was it should have been inspected which would have covered it.

Patience. Starting from a stop and the 1-2 shift are always the hardest on any manual car. Just give it time and you will get smoother with experience. It's not inadequate driving on your part, you just need to "feel the car out" so to speak and the shifting will get smoother (but never perfectly smooth thanks to the CDV as the dudes above mentioned).
