Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1985 318i which is actually in-transit to its new home as we speak. I can't seem to find out much in the way of performance specs on this model in that year. I understand the engine produced approx 104hp, can anyone elaborate on 0-60 times, 1/4 mile ect? I'm realized getting into this model that it wasn't going to be a fast car, but i imagine the power to weight ratio is respectable and the gas mileage is excellent so I'm sure I will be happy.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Saab guy gone BMW!

Actually the 85 318i had 105bhp@5800rpm, 145Nm@4500rpmm torque. the 0-62.14 mph time was 11.5 sec. I have no idea what the mpg rating was. The car weighed 2,248.72 pounds.

Thanks, I am sure I will be leaning on the members of this BB for assistance in the months ahead.

I have the original window sticker and it says the car gets on average 29 MPG hwy.

318i mpg

I had a 320i when I was in Europe and I averaged around 25 mpg, maybe 27 with tail wind!. It was a 6 Cyl. though. The 318i is a 4 cylinder and depending on the tuning and shape of the engine, you should have no problem reaching 30 mpg, provided you do not, live in mountain terrain.

Having driven "classic" Saabs per 1994 can i expect a similar ride and feel? I can't wait to drive this car! I've driven newer BMW like 540's from the mid 90's but I am a fan of older cars.

Are there any major differences between the 325's and the 318i from a handling perspective in 1985? My goal was to buy a driver that got good mileage but also was fun to drive. 11.5 on the 0-62 time doesn't wow me, possible there are some subtle mods that can be suggested to get more power without compremising gas mileage...any suggestion would be appreciated.

I do not know if the 318i in the US had the same engine as the 318i in Europe. If it was, the engine is 4 cylinder 1800 cc or 110 cubic inch. Do not expect the performance of a 323i or the 540 you drove in the mid 90's... It is a small engine and if you push it, you'll always be at the top end and will not expect to get 30 mpg...

Thanks for the info guys, any ideas on increasing performance with minimal impact on fuel economy?

BTW I'm using DAS (dependable Auto Shippers) to get my car delivered from PA to NH. They just told me it will be sitting in Linden NJ for an extra 6 days. I'm gonna have to wait to 5/3 to get my car now.....the company doesn't offer anything for in conveyance, I thought I mention it if anyone needs a car moved I don't think I could recommend these guys.

A lot of these shipping/transport companies will wait until they have more than one thing to transport in a particular direction. Its quite annoying

Congratulations on the purchase by the way, I almost bought a 87 325e a couple of weeks ago but I missed my chance. Hope to get an e30 or e34 for myself real soon
