Hello folks, I am about as green as can be so I will appreciate any hand holding you're willing to provide. I live in ATL and will greatly welcome any comments on dealerships that you may have experience with locally. As far as cars go, my initial thoughts are either leasing a new 3 series, or possibly purchasing a late model 5 series. Would be curious to hear any pros/cons on BMW leasing, particularly as it relates to regular maintenance on the car and your experiences with the dealerships. Also, do you know whether dealerships will ever lease a certified pre-owned? Just curious on that one. Thanks in advance and I look forward to your help!

Welcome to BMWboard, and hey I'm an Atlantian too so I'll pitch in my opinions. [:)]

Either of the 'big 3' will lease a used CPO 3 series - Global, either of the United's, or Hank Aaron. I suspect Nalley would too, but I don't deal with them (I was quit turned off by them when I went to purchase a car - they tried their best to put me in something *I* didn't want, left a bad taste in my mouth..)

Leasing is a good deal, and BMW pulls it off well, you can get a new 325 lease for around 300 after all is said and done. BMW is 4 years/free maint that applies to a bought or leased, new car so you're safe there.

I'm finishing off paying for this 'used' CPO car, so there are alot of options for you. I went to United BMW in Roswell, if you swing by there while checking out the dealers, ask for Jim Thompkins, first desk to the left when you hit the front door.

If you don't mind the drive - Athens BMW is reputedly the best BMW dealership in the state of Georgia insofar as maint work. Not sure how their selection is compared to the big guns in Atlanta.

In any event, I wish you luck, any more questions ask away, we've got a couple of ATL locals here!

Sounds like good advice by Section 8, although I'd buy not lease. Either way sounds like you can't loose and your getting some good advice on dealerships. By the way welcome to the board.

Browse the heck out of autotrader - and the online websites for the dealers I mentioned. they all have pages that you can browse their CPO selections:

www.unitedbmw.com (pick which location, roswell or gwinnett from there)
www.atlantabmw.com (global bmw)
www.hankaaronbmw.com (hank aaron, you know the baseball player) [:)]

and against my better judgement:
www.nalleybmw.com

I agree with Big Daddy - if you're going to go used go for the buy, don't lease a leased car - nothing inherently wrong with that except you could be leasing a new one for a little more (if you are set on leasing), and have a car when it's all said and done if you buy. (depreciation is like taxes - it happens one way or another)

Hope to run into you at one of our local meets one day. [:)]

First off, thank you SO VERY MUCH for the wonderful replies above. I look forward to following up on the dealerships that Section 8 recommends. After asking around, I have a colleague who knows the GM very well at Global, so I will probably start with them.

Got a follow up to my own earlier post. My boss told me this evening that he would be interested in selling me his 840 - black with light interior (not sure whether it's gray or tan); has around 85k miles on it; said the car is 9.5 years old; said he'd "work with me" and threw out a number is the low 20s. From what you guys know about the cars, is this something you'd recommend looking into? What about his initial numbers he threw out?

Cheers and thank you again for the warm welcome!

1st off - WOW, a 8 series (to bmw fanatics) is like the golden jabar of sorts. Not the fastest, but one of the neatest bmw's to drive - and own! The only consideration I'd have for making a 8 series my 1st bmw is - it is going to be your only car? 8 series are rare, 10 years on a BMW isn't much if well tended, and it sounds like it was for the most part (sounds like it was a daily driver for a little while). BUT, it will hit you in the pockets on repairs. A 3 series would be alot less to repair, and for the same price you could be in a much newer, cheaper to upkeep car. That, and that V8 is going to make quick work of your gas money. Luckily you live in Georgia, we have some of the cheapest gas in the country..

That said.. If I had 20+G's in my pocket (heck 30..) I'd take your boss out to dinner and see if I could pull off a deal.. [;)] His price sounds very right, and very fair if it's in good keep.

Sounds like you're in good hands no matter which way you go! [cheers]

i was at a car sale and fell in love with a 94 840 2 door 8 cly for 13,500. went to web site and learned need to see serial # to see what material engine block made off.( nikisal engine blocks bad) couldn't find performence stats on web(0-60-)but it sure looked nice.problem is buddy has a 98 m-3 convertable for $17,500 that may be a better car.?any ideas from bmw guys? I have 2 560sl's and love them, but should sell one , thinking of a bmw. so don't need another convertable. want the best bang for the buck.

840 is a nice car but unless it's an 850 v12, it's not worth the cost of ownership of an 8. Just go for the M3 vert, though 17,500 sounds kin dof high but it depends on mileage/condition.
