I'm getting my dad's 528i in June when I get my license. It'll have about 55-60k miles on it by then. I was looking at the Edge Motorworks 75k checklist for the E39 and read this:

Worn or Blown Shocks and Struts
Factory BMW shocks work great for about 30k. By 60k they are completely shot. Most folks who have been driving their cars since new hardly notice the deterioration as it is gradual. Symptoms include:Diving under braking and acceleration, excessive lean and suspension compression during cornering. Bouncy and uncomfortable ride. Shocks and struts may visibly leak shock oil. EDGE generally recommends replacing the factory units with quality shocks from Koni whenever possible. For some models, Konis are not available and Bilsteins become the next best choice. When replacing shocks and struts, keep in mind it is a great time to install lowering springs or freshen up other areas of the suspension. You will be amazed at the difference a good set of shocks can make in both comfort and performance!
Should I replace shocks? If I do, I don't need anything expensive. I just want something that is at least as good as the OEM shocks that came with the car.

Thanks in advance for your help, Alex.

Welcome Alex to the bmw board! Nice gift from your father and a good question. I do not believe the "factory shocks" are "competely shot" by 60k. BMW uses quality factory shocks. It would depend on how the car was driven. Push down on the car at a corner and if the car sinks easily the shocks are bad. Also do as the writer suggests and look for leaks, see if the car dives when you brake hard, and if it has a bad ride. But to say all factory shocks are compltely shot by 60k is not necessarily true. Look for Boge, Bilstiens or Koni shocks. Several of our sponsors in the "marketplace" section can give you a price quote.
