Okay, I Know all about the re-set available-I've gone through this with other cars. But I'm just wondering, I hear one can re-set the service/oil indicator w/ out a re-set tool-is this possible, and more important, safe for the OBC?
I'm anal about changing my own oil and would like to reset the indicator as scheduled. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

depending on the model and year... you can do it for free

some of the newer ones will allow for this to happen through the "stalk" functions

others will require jumping pin 7 and 19 for a few seconds

on the e39.... put the ignition in position 1 (do not start) and go to the OBC connection under the hood... place a wire (piece of coathanger wirks fine) and jump #7 and #19 for 5 - 6 seconds and pull out the wire... done

If reseting the Inspection ... leave for 10-12 seconds... done

Just takes a few seconds, a ground wire from PIN 7 to the block. No need for connectors. Just a simple 10 gauge wire. About 10 cents.....keep one in the glove box.[:D]

That will reset the lights yes, but it will screw up the mileage counts. The reset tools have electronics in them that "talk" to the Kombi, they don't just jump the pins. That is the reason why they take a few seconds to reset the lights. [driving]

actually... not necessarily true... If doing a in between oil change... why re-set the lights anyway... If the service indicator is on and they need to be re-set (to continue the correct countdown of litres of fuel used) then this is the correct method....

I NEVER re-set the oil lights prior to them NEEDING TO be... I change my oil every 5k miles... when the oil light needs to be re-set... I re-set the oil... then the Inspections light will come on later , I will address those issue at that time and change plugs, etc... then change the oil 3-4 times then re-set the oil light

I think the poster wanted to know how to re-set the oil service lights... I do not believe that the things that plung into the pot actually re-set inbetween oil changes

Curious on the problem with screwing up the mileage counter. Please give me more info on it. I have never had a problem so far. Curious to hear more and learn about it.
