Performance upgrades??

I am curious about chips to improve performance of my 2002 530. Do they work, how do they work, are they easy to install, are there warranty issues? What are the options? Also, are there any other things that can be done to increase horsepower without doing major work at the mechanics? I plan on holding on to my car for a while so I don't mind spending some money but I want things I can do myself.

well you can also do an air intake and exhaust those are pretty simple bolt in upgrades.
