Hi all. Can anyone tell me how easy it would be to replace the gasket for the oil sump. Had a leak and finally got to the bottom of the problem. Never replaced the gasket before so if anyone can advise - is this a job easy done, and does anyone have instructions on how to do it (the haynes manual isn't that good).
Cheers

Not the oil sump gasket. Checked with garage and is the rear crankshaft seal. Because its a G reg he advised not to fix it but basically just live with it as its not a bad leak. He told me the basic procedure for fixing it. Sounds really complicated and time consuming. Might just have to live with it.

It's a pain in the ass on any car. I believe you have to / may have to d/c the engine and tranny, you may have to remove the engine from the car (depending on space) take off the oil pan, oil pump (depending on location; if it blocks the crankshaft), crankshaft bearings, timing chain / belt, crankshaft gear, and anything else that may be in the way.

I did it on a Toyota Camry (4cyl fwd) and it took about two days, and that engine was alot simpler (I think) than the 3.2L motor. PLus there was alot of space b/c the engine bay was made to hold a v6 as well, so the 4cyl had much more area to work with.

But a car that is leaking oil really gets on my nerves; especially if it was my car. I don't htink I could just live with it. It would make me feel like my car is unreliable, falling apart, etc. Of course these are my opinions and are probably more psychologically based than anything else.

The parts required would not be too expensive; you can get kits which will have all the gaskets you would have to replace so that you don't have to buy it piece-meal. On the camry I think it was less that $80 for the kit. Labor is what'll kill you.

if it's worse when you parked facing downhill, it makes me think that it's not the rear, but the front seal which need replacing; the front is not as much work. You should peak your head under and take a look see.
