Hello,

My father recently passed away and my mother gave me his car. 1997 328is 5-speed. I drove it back home this past weekend. Have to say it is an awsome ride. 10-hours in it and I still wanted to keep on going.

Anyway, I have to replace the release bearing aka throw out bearing. Has anyone else had to do it? If so, what kind of time or how difficult will it be to do?

Thanks in advance,

Sorry to hear your loss.... I lost my father in 2000, it was tough....Since your father owned a BMW we can see that he had good taste....
I don't have any experience with the bearing, hopefully someone else on here will.
Welcome to the board.....

Welcome to the board, I too am sorry about the loss of your father. How many miles are on your car? It may be time to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.

Your most likely due for a clutch and pressure plate as well. I would have those serviced as soon as possible, if you are going to have the throw out bearing replaced you might as well anyway!

Again, welcome aboard the board and I too am sorry for you loss. I have to agree with Big D. I would replace the clutch, pressure plate, and bearing all at once since you will already have it opened up. It will be more cost efficient and save you time and money in the long run….

As for the cost? I haven’t had the displeasure of having this done on my car or any other BMW's I have owned. Good luck and let us know how it goes….

P.S. Post some pictures of your bimmer when you can. The members here would love to see it. Feel free to ask any other questions as well. Many of us here are more than happy to give a helping hand to another BMW enthusiast.....
