Hello, just discovered this awesome site and joined. I have just bought a 2002 525i, 42000 miles on it. I called the nearest dealer (Chico, Cal, about 75 miles away) and inquired as to setting up a time to have some service done, as I was told it was due. The head mechanic asked for my last 6 numbers of my VIN, and said the mainenance had expired jan of last year. I thought I had 50,000 or 4 miles for general maintenance. Does anyone know this to be true? Thanks, this is a great site!

Your 2002 5 Series has 4 years or 50,000 miles (which ever comes first). When was your car originally purchased? Was it purchased in 2001 as a 2002 model? 4 years could have passed since the day of original sale. This could be the answer/problem.

If you are out of warranty there are some independent shops in Redding that do BMW's. I have heard the one on Athens is good (I think it's called Oasis). I'm still in my extended warranty so still have to make the lovely drive to Chico for service.

Enjoy the car. I love my 2002 E39. It has about the same mileage as yours and has had no problems.

Maintenance right? In 2002, the maintenance part of the warranty may have been 3 years/36K miles whereas the bumper to bumper was 4yrs/50K. I know they bumped the maintenance part up to match the bumper to bumper somewhere around 2003.
