Need comments: looking to buy a 5-series

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I am considering purchasing a 2000 528i within two weeks. I've driven a 3-series before (Brother-in-law), and fell in love with the way it rides and handles curves. I wanted to know if the 528i is a good ride and what maintenance considerations do I have to consider if the current mileage is 71K?

All replies welcomed...

Just bought one myself.....2000 528i with the sport package....Great ride ...had no issues yet other than the battery need to be replaced and the radiator.

The ride of the 5 series, to me anyway, seems to be more luxurious. Still handles fantastically, but just not as rigid as the 3. It doesn't feel at all big when you drive it either, great car.

I prefer the ride of the 5 over the 3. It hits the sweet spot btw luxury and sport. The 3 is never luxe. The 5 falls on the luxe side, but there's just enough feel that you're amazed a car that size can still feel so nimble (may not feel so obvious, so just confirm by looking at the speedometer).

Thanks CaptnGeetch, hope you continue to enjoy the ride. I'm impressed with the specs and comments from this post and other forums regarding the 528i. I'll be test riding the 5 series soon. Although the 3 series handles well, I need more space with my little one...I hope to be postin pics of my ride soon.....

Drove both the 3 and the 5 before my purchase last year. Seemed to be a lot more room in the 5 and a much nicer ride. If possible get the sport package and you will not regret the handling. I am no expert but I drove 6 dealer trade-ins before I chose the 530 with sport and cold weather package (which I also recomend) Welcome aboard!!

The most immediate way to tell is by looking at the trim. The sport package doesn't have chrome around the windows; also comes with 17" rims and a 3 spoke steering wheel (most of the time).

In addition to what shadymilkman posted, some of the other features include the following:

Sport Package :

17x8.0 Alloy Wheels

Sport suspension

Leather 3 spoke sport steering wheel

10 way adjustable sport seats

Foglights

I have the same model, different year (1997) and purchased at 70,000 miles. Replaced the radiator immediately. Changed hoses and clamps, changed the power steering fluid and had a transmission service at 80k. I anticipate the catalytic converter is next. Since mine is older, you should have fewer issues.

I go to a mechanic that lets me on the floor as he does the work. He only works on BMW's and helps me prioritize what needs to be done and what can be put off and for how long.

I ask alot of questions (since girls didn't take autoshop...do they still have that?) and you may want to consider an independant mechanic that specializes in BMW's and shares the enthusiasm.

Additionally, the ride is so sweet. Everyone comments on it, including my two kids and my 80 year old mother. My only somewhat minor criticism is that the 2.8 litre may be a tad undersized for this solid machine.
