Getting ready to make a switch from a 2004 Volkswagen R32 to around a 1999 BMW 528i and I was wondering what things I should look for as far as problem areas, etc. The cars that are hitting my prices range ($12-15k) are bringing in rather high miles into the 100k's and I wasn't sure what to think of this. Some people are telling me that the BMW I6 is like a rock and not to worry while others are telling me to stay away.

I'm looking for a reliable and comfortable car to use on road trips, etc., that will last for a good while. Thanks for the help and glad to part of this new forum!

BMW inline sixes if maintained properly are capable of well over 200k! I had over 240k on a 733i when I sold it, and more than 160k on a 318is (4 cylinder) when I sold her. The biggest thing is do they have the maintenace records and have the car inspected by a reliable German car mechanic.

By the way, welcome to the board!

What about as far as this car being a "fun" car? I understand that everyone obviously agrees that the 540i is more of an enthusiast's car, but that's not in my repair price range as of yet. I just don't want something that I'll fall asleep on while driving -- although test drives were fun, it's hard to say what it would be like in the long run. Thanks for the reply.

Depends on what you call "fun". I think of a fiver as more of a family car, but that does not mean that it is not fun. I drive a roadster for fun so I may be biased. Could a 528 be fun, sure!
