Key doesn't work?

I just picked up a 2000 540i over the weekend. Both master keys that came with the car will not unlock or lock the car. At the time I figure they had dead batteries. But after reading the owner and went for a long drive to charge the key up. It still doesn't work.

Does this mean I need new keys or the receiver in the car is dead? How much does a new key cost?

Congrats, it could be that your keys need to be programmed.

1. Using the key , lock your doors manually to set the alarm, then unlock the car get in and close the door.
2. Insert key in ignition. Turn to position 1 and quickly turn back off . Remove the key
3. At same time you are holding unlock button on the key, press the lock button three times in sucession, You should hear the doors lock and unlock,
4. Quickly (within 30 seconds pick up the other keyand press the buttons as above, Do not put the second key in the ignition.
