item next to OBD in 98 328i?

What is the item under the dash adjacent to the OBD? It is rectangular w/holes and sits right to the left of the OBD in my 98 328i.

Ah, right now its just an empty space! I was at the dealer today and they are going to fix it - supposedly some type of adapter that had its 2 screws missing...
