Help, I can't find the expansion tank!

I have a 1988 BMW 316 which seems to be overheating. When I want to check the coolant level I couldn't find the expansion tank anywhere. I have identified all other tanks etc but cant find it.

The only thing I can see is the cap on the radiator but there is no level associated with this.

Any help much appreciated.

If you have a cap on the radiator, you don't have an expansion tank - the 4 cylinder cars didn't have expansion tanks as far as I know.

How do I know how much coolant to put in, or if I'm running low - a can't see any kind of level indicator?
