Can anyone here please enlighten me as a newbie BMW owner why they use General Motors tranny. Are they owned by General Motors like how Benz's is owned by Chrysler?
I'm not trying to put GM down but maybe they do not have as close tolerance on quality of there cars as BMW???

I came across this article last summer when I was researching the issue:

BMW TO USE NEW GM TRANSMISSION FAMILY
FOR RELEASE: Sept. 18, 1996
CONTACT: Joseph C. Lawrence
Phone: (810)857-4029

PONTIAC, Mich. -- General Motors Corporation’s GM Powertrain Group announced today it has signed a multi-year agreement with BMW AG to supply BMW with the all-new Hydra-matic 5L40-E five-speed and 4L40-E four-speed automatic transmissions for a wide range of future BMW vehicle applications.

GM has supplied Hydra-matic automatic transmissions to BMW since 1991. Currently, the Hydra-matic 4L30-E is used in BMW’s 3- and 5- series cars and the Z3 roadster. GM Powertrain’s Strasbourg, France plant builds the Hydra-matic 4L30-E and will produce the new 5L40-E and 4L40-E, as well.

"We are pleased to be able to continue our association with BMW and are looking forward to working with its product development experts to successfully integrate these two new transmissions into BMW’s product lineup," said William J. Boskey, director, International Sales, Marketing, and Joint Ventures for GM Powertrain.

The Hydra-matic 5L40-E and 4L40-E automatic transmissions were introduced at the 1995 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt. The two transmissions, with a maximum engine torque of approximately 380 Nm, can be used in passenger car or light truck applications, for either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations. Advanced electronic controls and light weight ensure excellent fuel economy.

The Hydra-matic 5L40-E is GM’s first five-speed automatic transmission. The five speeds provide improvements in performance, ability to climb grades, fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and lower noise levels at cruising speeds. Both the 5L40-E and 4L40-E offer GM Powertrain’s new Electronically Controlled Capacity Clutch in the torque converter for improved fuel efficiency and shift smoothness, along with “fill-for-life” transmission fluid for ease of maintenance.

GM Powertrain is the world’s largest manufacturer of engines, automatic transmissions, castings and related components. Based in Pontiac, Michigan, USA, the GM Powertrain Group operates 27 plants and eight engineering centers in the United States, Canada, Mexico and France, and employs nearly 57,000 people. GM Powertrain has a global focus on serving customers within GM and throughout the world, from North and South America, to Europe, Asia, and Australia. Product and process teams work together to create the best powertrain products and services.

GM Transmission problems in their OWN vehicles:

Sunday, March 14, 2004

GM halts sales of some '04 models

Faulty pump produces transmission failure in pickups, SUVs, vans

By Ed Garsten / The Detroit News

DETROIT — A problem that could cause transmissions to fail in some 2004 full-size pickup trucks, SUVs and vans led General Motors Corp. to temporarily stop shipping the vehicles from assembly plants on Friday.

The company also asked dealers not to sell or deliver the trucks to customers.

The transmissions, produced at GM’s Willow Run transmission plant, could fail because of a faulty pump that may prevent lubrication from reaching overdrive gearset bearings, according to GM spokeswoman Debbie Frakes.

The problem does not pose a safety issue, she said.

About 25,000 vehicles may be affected, said Frakes. Of those, 8,000 have been delivered to customers and another 1,700 are in transit between assembly plants and dealers.

The company believes only about 2,000 vehicles actually have the problem, said Frakes.

The problem was corrected at the transmission plant and the six assembly plants that build the Chevrolet Express and Silverado, GMC Suburban, Sierra, Savana and Yukon XL and W4 medium duty truck, resumed production late Friday.

However, every truck coming off assembly lines and in plant holding lots is being inspected before they are released for delivery to dealerships and customers. Dealers must also inspect vehicles they have in stock.

GM is urging owners to have their vehicles inspected at a dealership service center at no cost. Until they do, owners are being told to use third gear rather than overdrive.

Mercedes owns Chrysler.....and has replaced Chrysler Execs with Germans. It is horrible that they merged, but Mercedes is 100% in control. Just wanted to clarify that. It is embarassing enough that the two have merged, but at least Mercedes holds the whip!!!!!!!!!! [nono]

Really? huh! I really thought it is the other way around base on what I have read and heared before. Do you have an article saying this because we also own an 04 E320 and if I remember correctly Chrysler Dhad the signature on our windshield.

Anyway, thanks for the help in Clarifying this matter. One more thing. If my tranny on the window sticker says made in Germany then my tranny is not made by GM?

Mercedes and Chrysler merged, with Mercedes in control. Mercedes has replaced almost all Chrysler Execs with Germans. Trust me Mercedes is in control....although both Mercedes and Chrysler vehicles suck....really sad for Mercedes, because up until like 1998 or 1999 MBZ cars were bullit proof.

The window decal on the windshield is on all Mercedes. It used to say " a Daimler-Benz" product, then said "a Mercedes-Benz" product....It might say now "a DaimlerChrysler' product.... but I doubt it.

The transmisson that says Made in Germnay is German made....no ties to GM France at all!!!! I too have the German tranmission, and I am sooo happy for that!!! take care.

GM has been making BMW automatic transmissions for a long time. GM is widely considered to be one of the top automatic transmission manufacturers in the world, so it is not a bad thing.

The Daimler Chrysler merger was sold to Chrysler as a merger of equals, but that was a ruse. It was a takeover, and Daimler is in control. Daimler admitted that a few years ago.

Mercedes owns Chrysler, biatch !!! That's why the Chrysler Crossfire, Pacifica, and maybe some other cars feature lots of parts from Mercedes (i.e. Mercedes' V6 engine, suspension, and platform are packed under the Crossfire).
Also, Mercedes can handle anything financially...they are a HUGE HUGE HUGE company...they spend something like $9 billion a year just on research!

They had Getrag transmissions for the E46 323 model. Did they change it to ZF when they replaced it with the 325 model?

Transmission for 2002 330i

Hello Fellow Enthusiast.
I just joined BMWWORLD. I love this site.

I have a 2002 330i- Steptronic. How do I know the
manufacturer of my transmission?
Thank goodness--so far, I have not experienced any
kind of tranny slippage. Knock on Myrtle.

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Maybe it's Getrag. I just read somewhere that ZF also makes a tranny for the 3. All I know for sure is that my tranny came from Germany.

Yeah, that's probably good enough. [bmwkick]

To my knowledge, the 325i/Ci has a Getrag 5-speed transmission whereas the 330i/Ci has a ZF 6-speed transmission (or a ZF 5-speed until last year). Just FYI. [thumb]

This is where I'm confuse my original but now fix tranny is supposedly from Germany (ZF?) but the problem is from the GM trannies, right?
Is it possible that my sticker will say Transmission made in Germany even if it actually came from GM?

You sure about that? I've never seen any 3-Series in the showroom whose sticker says the automatic transmission came from Germany.
