I'm looking to buy a used BMW here soon. I thought I wanted a Volvo, but decided on a BMW after driving a friend of mines. But here is my question, what are the pros and cons of the e30's, e36's, and e46's. I really like the body style of the e36 and e46's, but the e30's are cheaper. I'm looking at getting a 325i or if I get a later model, either a 325i or 328i. Either way, in a 5spd.

What are the common problems? What are just plain problems on either years?

Obviously care by the previous owner must be taken into account, as well as mileage. Currently I'm really leaning toward a e36 or e30. e46 looks to be out of my price range, but I included it just in case I came across a good deal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, I am new, so hello everyone!

e30's are wonderful and highly sought after cars, well balanced and easy to mod for track etc. Getting up there in age and mileage.

e36 are getting very reasonable in price, some have had issues but nothing that is drastic.

It all depends on how much you want to spend, how many miles your willing to accept on a used car, and how much DIY stuff you can do. All the models you list are great cars, I am partial to the 328 as I once owned a 2.8 Z3 and loved that motor. I would buy the e46 if it is in your price range. If you want a toy to mod and enjoy go with the e30.

I am leaning toward a e36, because I want something in between. 328's are going for as little as 8k around my area. I heard they have some issues as far as cooling? What other issues do the e36's have?

I am not sure about any cooling issues with the 2.8, I believe that some of the e36's had issues with the radiator and or hose connections, as well as the thermostat housing. I do not believe it mattered if it was the 2.5 or the 2.8. Try a Google search for e36, there are tons of sites dedicated to the issues with this and other models. Best of luck.
