I am looking to buy a 1992-1993 BMW 325i as my first car. I have a budget of 4000$ and was wondering if a BMW would cost more to fix. For instance a new clutch would that cost more than a regular domestic car? Also is it harder to fix a problem in a BMW. Like a normal oil change or any normal problems because of old age. If you can answer these questions it will be very helpful. Thanks!!

Depending on who you go thru, yes, BMW's do cost alot to maintain, but the driving experience is worth it. Just don't blow a water pump...mine cost 475.00 to replace after labor(ouch). what are they asking for the car?

I'm 17 and I got my 1992 325i when I was 16 as my first car. The parts can be more expensive but shop around and you'll be able to get good deals. Also, get to know the car really well so you can do a lot of the work yourself. The engines are unbelievebly reliable so you shouldn't need to worry about a rebuild or anything, which is pretty much the only thing you couldn't do on the car youself. An OEM metal water pump is like $80 and isn't too hard to install but if you don't do it youself on these cars your going to pay for it. All in all, it's a real good choice if you've got the time, patience and intelligence to fix the car youself.

Thanks alot. I would be installing them myself. I wouldn't bring it in to a dealership because it always costs a lot more. If any one else has a BMW and agreees with this please send a post. Thanks a lot.

I agree totally with installing myself, but i had to go the dealer route b/c my tools are all gone, and i didn't have any access to any either. otherwise i would have been completely happy to camp out under the hood. that problem is being remedied though...craftsman, here i come!

Hopefully my loving wonderful father will let me have one.
My dad hated bmw's, but i bought one anyways!

I absolutely love my 88 325is. It's so worth the money. I'm hooked for life (or until they no longer appeal to me).

Yes it does cost more to maintain, BUT, if you spend 200 dollars on a repair on a bmw instead of 100 on the same repair on a chevy, the part on the bmw will last more than twice as long (for the most part.) and it'll STILL be a more solid car. Plus you do get respect when you drive a bmw. I didnt worry and still dont worry about getting any respect for my car, but I'm tellin ya -- people are much more interested in you if you own a bmw instead of a regular old chevy or ford. Everyone know's they are better cars, that's why [hihi]

Owning a used BMW does not make you all that and a bag of chips though. There are plenty of Fords and Chevys that still get respect.....among other cars. Don't take it the wrong way. [:p]

Lol I know, I'm just saying you'll get more respect in a bmw than say a cavalier.

Ya, it is a little more. But if you do the work yourself it's not too bad. My friend has a 73' VW Bug and a new (much faster) engine is only like $2,500 for the complete setup. In my 633, that would almost be the cost of the heads alone!

Go for the BMWer, I have had Mustang's and the BMWer is far superior in many respects, Mustang will be faster off the line but only in a straight line...BMW's cost more to repair but is worth it, I still like Mustang's and love to drive friends but happy to own a BMW!
