Hello all,

When I was raising rear right window a couple of days back, it made a noise and stopped raising the window. I have raised it manually and stuck it with tapes. It appears to be that some sort of belt got loose inside.

I have E46 (2001). Apparently, my car had window problem while in warranty with previous owner. It was fixed.

Is that a known problem, and is it expensive to fix it? (since I have airbags all around)
Will I need to take it to a BMW dealer only, or can a certified BMW mechanic fix it?

Any help is appriciated.
TIA,
Concoran

Pretty sure it won't impact on your airbags at all. As far as taking it to a mechanic instead of the dealer, I'm assuming they'll just have to get the same part that has broken and then install it which could possibly be cheaper, saying that however, I have no idea about cost since I'm on the other side of Earth =D

Window regulator. Very common unfortunately. BMW refuses to see it as a problem tho. You can actually do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined. Not a big deal. A certified BMW mechanic should be more than adequate.

I had the same problem, Window regulator. I love BMWs, but after owning two I am skeptical about buying another. The engines are great, but they quality issues when it comes to electronic, trims, accessoris, fit and finishes; they are bad. It seems like some one forgot to use glue, instead of spit. It's too bad, because I like their cars, but I can't keep on going to the dealer or the shop. It's not only expensive, but it's very embarrassing. There are too many good cars out there for BMW to ignore their short coming. [read]

I dont know about the "fit and finishes" portion of your post but the electronics and some of their accesories could use a little touching up on...namely the window regulators(I had to replace two both on the front driver/passenger side) and the stupid cupholders.......the trim is fine inline with other cars if not a little bit better. The windows are pulled up and down by a steel cable that is running thru a pulley type system made up of plastic.....no wonder they go bad as the moter has to work harder and harder as the plastic detiorates cause more tension and friction on the cables.....Look at number "5" in the picture and that is the part that goes out. Of course the round circular things are the plastic pulleys....
