First BMW Purchase

I am new to the BMW world and looking at picking up my first one. Looking at a 95-98 540 or possible 95-98 740. Looking at these models because they are comfortable, roomy, luxury cars with power, style, etc. Based on the amount I would like to spend mileage on these cars are ranging from 80K-100K.
I am selling my Acura 3.5RL which was a great car with decent power, very reliable, but I am simply board with the car and need something a little more exciting. Like one of the previous posts I am concerned about the expense of maintaining one of these cars along with reliability, what am I getting myself into and what should I definitely stay away from. Appreciate any help.

Welcome to the bmwboard. I think the 540's and 740's are great cars. Depending on the year you want read up on the Nikasil issue.

Thank you, this is helpful, where do I find more articles like this? I ran into some articles like this on the internet before but I cannot find them again, from some things I have read in the past it appears that there are certain models and years that you want to avoid so I would like to know which those are.

It is amazing what you can find by a Google search. Type in BMW than the e designation you want (BMW e32 for example) and check the pages listed. Good luck with your search and keep us posted.
