Since BMWs have high-performance brakes, you can't simply just replace the pad. With other cars, you can replace the pad maybe two or three times before it's time to change the disc, but with a BMW since the brakes are so powerful you need to change everything, the disc and the pad. That's why BMWs are expensive to maintain. If I were you I'd forget about aftermarket parts, my experience with aftermarket has been a shitty one, even when buying the "same" brakes from shops that claim to sell the exact same brake that comes OEM (original equipment manufacturer) with the car. Just go to your BMW dealership and ask for brakes and pads.

I went through three sets of pads before I replaced the rotors on my 91 318is, I am currently on the second set of pads on the 91 750iL, using stock rotors and I am on the second set of pads on my 98 M roadster using the stock rotors. If the rotors are not warped, cracked or outside thickness specs they do not need replacing.

I'm getting to the point that I would do almost anything to say goodbye to the OEM pads. Two days after I wash my car, the wheels look like $#!^ again.

I agree. I like ceramic brakes, last longer and much less dust.

I went through a couple of sets of OEM rotors because of warping, before I finally bought Brembo cross drills, which I never had to replace. I put some cross drills on my E39 recently. After I did the caliper that was bad locked up and temporarily warped the rotor. After it cooled off, it was fine. It depends on your style of driving, if you don’t brake hard constantly at high speeds OEM rotors should be sufficient

Don't cross drilled rotors cause more dust my biting into the pad more though? Could be wrong though, I've never had them. I've always understood that they are supposed to improve heavy breaking ability.

id get the slotted rotors from ate and the green stuff brake pads from ebc or you can go to regular bmw pagid brake pads but heres a link for the green stuff:: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/rodi/ebcv4gstbrpa.html
and rotors:
https://secure3.nexternal.com/share...t2=193915963&Target=products.asp&ProductID=76

you can check other stores for lower prices. i wouldnt worry about the brake dust because you will have a car that will stop better. accept greater stopping power with more dust.

just my opinion

my bad heres a link to a set of ate rotors:
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=34111160936PD

other places may be cheaper.i have them and they work so well. especially on the freeway when cars suddenly stop and you got to step HARD. and especiallywhen i am drafting a car or tailgating as regular people would say. the cost of oem sized slotted rotors and aftermarket performance brake pads are just as expensive as the dealer would sell the stock rotor and pads.
