Hi There
Can anyone please help me, I have a 1996 740i for 9 months. The car has been running perfectly until two weeks ago. I called into our local Quick Fit to get the front wheels balanced and when I was there I got them to do an oil change and replace the oil filter. The next day I noticed an awful amount of light blue smoke and the idle was not right. I went back and they had put the wrong oil in and they changed it to fully synthetic. They did not replace the filter. There is still a lot of exhaust fumes and the car is running bad at low speeds. Thank You.

Two things to consider:

1. They used synthetic, but it is too "thin", ie they used 5w-30 but it needs 10w-40. Check the specs that BMW calls for. In particular, Mobil 1 tends to be very thin and cause problems like this. For example, there are reports on the internet that Mobil 1 5w-30 is much thinner than Castrol 5w-30.
2. Perhaps the original oil they used was also too thin (the smoke is pretty good evidence) and the spark plugs are now fouled, hence the poor running symptoms.
