I'm considering purchasing a 540 or M5. I've heard that the manual tranny is a bit busy (shifting). I've tested both and like both. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I got rid of my 2002 330xi with an automatic for a 2004 330i with 6 speed about a month ago. I have not regreted that decision for a second and still have a s**t eating grin every time I get in it.

Go with the manual transmission be it a 540 6 speed or the M5. And if given a choose go with the M5.

Manuel plzzz shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
You can actually do a search in this forum to find a lot of discussions about this topic....
My humble opinion is that if you are going to buy a M-powered Sports-Car, then let it be a true sports car and get a manual, so you can get the most power/performance/fun out of it. If you just want to get an expensive and very comfortable car, that is gonna turn a lot of heads then I would recommend a Benz, or 7-th series...

P.S. M5 is one of my dream-cars.....

I took an E34 M5 across Europe in the summer. 1600Km in one day!!! Its a manual and (due to the fact that the car revs to 7200Rpm) i never had a problem with it at all. There is so much tourque un the M5 that you'll be able to leave it in 6th at 70Mph and just boot the throttle to get up to 180Mph+ without it feeling sluggish at all!!! The M5 is definatly the one to go for Quicker, Faster and Better handling than the 540. Are you going the E60 or E39 route???

You also have to consider resale value. Not sure what the price difference is between a manual and automatic 540 but I would bet the manual would hold it's value a little better.

The demand for a 6-speed will always be around. The demand for an automatic ain't going anywhere either but when the time comes, who would you rather turn the keys over too. A track-day warrior or a garage sale cruising grandmother.

On the other hand, I would imagine that the buyer would much rather receive the keys of his used car from the garage sale cruising grandmother who rarely drives the car and garages it over another track-day warrior.

And get the manual 540 unless 90% of your driving is done stuck in traffic. I wasn't aware that M5s even came in autos unless they were one-off specially modified ones like Kobe's Lambo.
