I have the opportunity to chose between the following 2 cars:

2000 328i, 37000 miles, $22995 or 1999 740iL, 47000 miles, $24995

Both cars appear to be in equally good shape and the dealer has a very good reputation.
I'm naturally leaning towards the 740, but I'm wondering if the 328 would be a better investment and less expensive to maintain over the long run.

Opinions and reasons would be appreciated...

first of all: welcome to the board!

to your problem. both cars are absolutley uncompareable and i think you should choose based on your taste and tendency.

as far as costs are concerend, the 7series will be more expensive i believe. inspections, oilchanges, mpg, it is all more than a 3 series. the 3 series has little less miles and is younger than the 7er.

could you compare the insurance rates? i can imagine that a 7er is more expensive in that area as well.
so from a money point of view go with the 3er. and there comes the taste again....

It depends on what you want. If you want fun, the the 328 is the way to go. You have a 3 series so you know what that is like. Personally, I feel cramped in our 325. The 740 has more of a prestige look and will be more comfortable for you and passengers and should still be a joy to drive. I agree with Wadula about maintenance costs. As for investment, I think the re-sale on both would be good.
If I were fortunate enough to make the choice here, I'd go for the 740.
