1990 518i - engine problems and advice for a novice!!

Hi Everyone

I am a complete novice [:(]

Nevertheless, I wonder if you might be able to help me out. I have a 1990 518i manual with 175,000 miles on the clock, that has run OK for the two or so years I've had it.

Last week, however, the engine stalled as I accelerated into second on a slight hill. I couldn't get it started again so rolled backwards down the hill and tried to bump it but to no avail. I phoned the roadside assistance people, and when they arrived it started OK but the idle was erratic, going from 1000 to about 4000 revs and then cutting out. This simply righted itslef after a while and the car drove as normal.

I thought there might be a fuel starvation kind of problem, so added injector cleaner to the tank and noticed an almost immediate improvement in engine performance, although the idle speed was moving between about 500 and 1000 revs. A couple of days later, I had the fuel, air and engine oil filters changed. I had the sparks done about three months ago.

The car was going fine for about a week until, coming home from work tonight, the engine just died, once again accelerating into second. This time it was not possible to restart at first, although at the third attempt the engine fired with revs shooting up (to about 5000) and down and finally cutting out. I got the tow truck to take me and the car home and it won't start at all now.

I phoned a couple of mechanics I know, who made noises about the airflow meter or maybe coil. None seemed to think the injectors a likely source of trouble and scorned my feeble attempts to clean it. One even hinted darkly at possible ECU failure.......

Now, I am no expert at all - and will obviously not be trying to effect any but the most rudimentary repairs myself. But the thing is, I live in Spain and honest mechanics are even thinner on the ground here than in other parts of Europe. So what I'm after are a few pointers to sort of head me in the right direction.

Any help gratefully received.

They didn't make any 518is for the American market. Considered too underpowered, I guess. I'll post a picture of the engine tomorrow, if you like. I think I've located the problem, by the way, and its not good.

The plenum had filled up with water, flooding the ECU chamber, which was half under. I've removed the unit, taken it apart and am now drying it out, hoping (probably in vain, I know) that it'll work when I reconnect it..... Hmmmm..... No more carwashes for me, and I'll drill a new drain hole in the plenum I suppose.

The 518i production ran from 1989 to 1996 when only two were made! They made 113 bhp@5500 rpm, and 162 Nm of torque @4250 rpm. Top speed was 190 km/h and 0 - 100 km was 12.5. Insteringly they produced a 518g as well being a Natural gas or Gasoline engine. Just some intersting information!

An old friend of mine had a 518i and rebadged it to say 525i now if I recall correctly he sold it with that badge still on it...im not sure if he ever confessed to the buyer about his little mod [}:)]

I seem to have sorted my problem out (fingers crossed), by the way. I dried the ECU in the oven for a few hours, after spraying it with WD40, reinstalled it, cleaning all the relays and, surprise surprise, the car srpung into life first time. I haven't had time to take it more than round the block a couple of times yet, so I guess I'll give it a proper test tomorrow.

Still have to unblock the plenum and drill a new hole but its stopped pissing down now........

Well,I guess the drying out wasn't 100% succesful after all. The car starts now, no problem and I've been around the block a couple of times. The idle is uneven though, and there is a lot of spluttering plus whiteish smoke coming out of the exhaust. All things considered, this could well mean that the ECU is totally f****d, right?

I'm reluctant to drive it any distance at the moment, so I suppose I'll have to try and find an ECU in a breakers or simply trash the car, as a new unit really wouldn't be worth it.

That's unless anyone has any suggestions..............
