I have a 78 633csi with a 4spd Manual. I am having problems with my driveshaft, it looks like the driveshaft flex joint but i am not sure. It's a round mount with 6 holes for bolts, outside is metal and inside is rubber. the rubber broke, and my driveshaft is loose, lucky me my car didnt rip in half. It's the connecting piece inbetween the driveshaft and transmission. i cant drive it. is anyone on here handy with older Beemers?.

here's a link to a picture of the part

I think most BMW have this "guibo" but I'm not sure how they break though.... I thought they just kind of rotted away, and turned into a ball of rubber and string... maybe that's what you mean. However, it's not too hard to replace them as I recall... you just have to have a good air compressor and some patience. I know mine was a pain in the @$$ to get the bolts to turn... 3 bolts come off from one side, and three from the other. Better have a torque wrench too to make sure they're all tightened down evenly. I wouldn't drive it at all till it's fixed.

well it did just rot away, the car's almost 30 years old. the rubber on the inside has rotted to shit. after i replace this part im having it taken to a BMW dealership to give it a full diagnostic.

You're a brave man taking a 30 year old car to a dealership. Half of the salesmen won't even know what you're driving:)

oh! ... and they'll take all your money. and they might even kick you in the nuts just to be sure they got you. [kick]

Have you handled your guibo joint yet? just did mine not too long ago, wasn't that hard. Get yourself a good manual, chiltons is usually the better of most, and it should give you a good comprehensive step by step. Took me about an hour total time from raising the car to putting my tools away, and I'm a girl. [:X] . good luck.

And if i'm not mistaken, on all models you need to remove the metal band from the outside. I know that when my bother forgot to do that on his 2002 many years ago, it took out the new guibo when it let loose.

The one for my 6 didn't even come with a band on it. [:X]

the only reason i want to take it to a dealership is for a diagnostic. i worked for a service dept in a dealership, i know exactly how they operate. but since then ive found a good bmw mechanic who would almost pay me to work on it he loves the car so much. but the only question i have now is how i get the driveshaft disconnected from the transmission enough to place the "guibo" on

mark it and pull it out from the rear output shaft........might as well replace that carrier bearing while your there. But then you mechanic should know all this, right? [:X]
